I cant exactly say when WAG gives an I/O error, because sometimes the progress bar gets further then other times. I'm trying to create a playlist for Citrus Alarm to load into Winamp for my morning alarm. I created an m3u playlist using winamp, and saved it to C:\Users\*****\Music\wakeup.m3u. I create an alarm with that playlist, and check "Use external media player for alarm." When I test the alarm, I get the popup screen, an error from the taskbar saying the file is corrupt or there's no codec installed. All of the files in the playlist as well as the m3u file itself play fine from within Winamp, and they also play fine when double-clicked right from Windows Explorer. Further, if I bypass the playlist and specify one specific media file in the alarm, that one file tests fine.
