Dreamweaver linking (4 posts)

    Hi,

I am trying to link my Dreamweaver built site to my album. I try to copy all the files built by WAG into an Album folder on my web site and then link to the folder from a web page.

When I try to copy the files into the folder, Dreamweaver says it "cannot open Jpeg files" and asks for HTML files for every image I try to copy... and then proceeds to create a separate page for every image... weird!

Linking to the Album folder only generates a blank page when I try to preview.

I really want to figure this out. I know a lot of web sites use WAG quite effectively but I cannot seem to find the "secret" to linking or pointing to the correct file(s) so I can open an Album... not to mention why Dreamweaver chokes every time I try to copy over the files.

I am doing this on my local drive so I can ensure everything works before I FTP to the hosts Server... nothing like a series of bogus Albums to make a visitor leave.

I know Dreamweaver can use JPEG files, so there must be something I am doing wrong. Anyone care to toss some ideas my way?

    Thanks!

When you copy the files to your folder on site, you should up-load the following. The CSS file, the photos folder intact, and the album index.html, point the link to the folder name, + index.html like this:
    <a href="folder name/index.html">your link name, or icon</a>

This should work, there is no reason for it not to. I use Coffee Cup HTML editor, and if Dream Weaver is this much trouble I would dump it.

    Steve,

I try to copy the Photo folder and all the files and that is when DW starts to choke and say "DW cannot open JPEG files. Use HTML or XML files." It says that for EVERY picture, small and large and then when I try to close the dialog box, it generates a separate TAB in DW for every image!!

It's the craziest thing I have ever seen. I can insert the very same JPEG photos manually without issue. I can link between them without issue. But let me try to drag and drop the WAG folder and files and DW has a hysterectomy!

I used to program with HTML but really do not have the time nor desire to spend in front of the computer for hours maintaining a web site. I was hoping someone with DW experience could chime in and tell what I am doing wrong.

    Thanks!

I asked my son about this, he uses DW. He said that using drop & drag was your problem. That is the reason it is asking for html/xml files, it cannot establish a link to the JPG's in drop & drag. The only thing you can do is create a virtual sever on your hard drive, before it can establish a link. But that is a little beyond my expertise, so unfortunately I can't tell you how to do it.

But he did say that it should all work, even as is, once loaded to your web-server?. With the proper links installed naturally.
