Sounds like a bad install, try removing WAG, and reinstalling it. What windows are you using.

This issue hasn't really been reported before. Do you have any more information for me so I can investigate? What are your system specs?

I tried to generate an album with version 1.8.2 and it allowed me to import photos, move them around, ad get them ready for album generation, but as soon as I clicked generate the program froze.

I downloaded the 1.6.5 version and experienced the same issue.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, and it still happens everytime.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a SONY Vaio vgns560P with 1.5 gig memory. Can I provide any additinal information about my setup to help troubleshoot?

I love this application and use it quite often.

Your machine specifications do not look like a problem to me, I run the program on far less.

I don't know if Mark used any java in the generation process or not?. But if so you might check to see if Java VM is turned on?.

Also local firewalls or popup blockers could be a problem, or even some antivirus programs could affect generation?. (?)

Does a file ending in the extension ".alb" appear after you generate your album? It's usually the last thing to be created, so if WAG is crashing at the end of the generation process every time, I'd be interested to see if that's the culprit.

If the file isn't appearing, my guess is that the crash has something to do with the XML DLL that WAG uses. That DLL is included with Internet Explorer. If possible, try to re-install Internet Explorer (any version higher than 5) and see if that fixes the problem.

It never generates an album. I click the 'generate' icon and the application title bar dims like a background app does, and never responds again. I click the title bar and it gives me the 'dink', 'dink' sound of an app that's hosed.

I have to kill the app through task manager, but it starts up just fine afterward. I also tried to save the album first without photos and that worked, but as soon as I added a photo and clicked generate the same problem happened.

I have no idea why this started. It worked fine on another laptop with an almost identical setup. Could it be a java error? Do you really want me to reinstall IE? I'm currently running 6.0.9x.

If you can save an album containing photos, but not generate it, then you probably won't need to re-install IE. If you can't even save an album that contains photos (through the "File" "Save As" menu), then re-installing IE may work.

WAG doesn't use any Java technology, so you won't need to install that.

If the error is occurring at the actual photo generation process, then there's possibility it could be some sort of error with your video card or drivers. If you're using some sort of 2D accelerator, perhaps you could try disabling it. Otherwise, I'm pretty much stumped.

Is there any other information you can provide? Did WAG work previously on the same laptop?

Not the same laptop, but one very similar. An older version of the same Vaio (I knew I'd regret upgrading). I'll try the video driver approach. Maybe there's a newer version I can install. Very frustrating - I love this program!

I figured it out!!! It's something really weird, but I had an external monitor plugged into my laptop and was using it as a dual monitor setup and when I disabled the second monitor it worked just fine.

To test this I did an album generation with one active monitor and it worked flawlessly. I then expanded my desktop to the second monitor through the "Display Properties" of the Windows desktop, and attempted to create another album and experienced the freezing app. While it was in this hung state I disabled the expanded desktop/monitor and the app instantly unfroze and popped up the next box asking for the album name.

Very strange indeed, but it's working. Thanks for a great product!

That's one to put in the old memory files.

I know it's been awhile since this post, but has the multi-monitor issue been resolved? I don't want to disable my 2nd monitor.

I think this is still a problem in the currently released version. (Sorry, I know it's taking a while to fix!)

That said, a brand new version is actively under development, and it isn't affected by this problem. If you'd like to receive an email notification when new versions of Web Album Generator are released, I invite you to sign up for the announcement list.
