    Hello
    I have been a long time user of Araneae. I like it a lot.

    I have two suggestions.
    *Make a Linux port of Araneae.
    *Make it open source.

    If either one of these conditions are met, I promise that I will;
    * Make translations of Araneae into other languages.
    * Make Document Support for more programming/scripting languages.
    * Make Extra Quick Clips.

    I like your enthusiasm!

    There are currently no plans to port Araneae to Linux or open the source, but if things change there'll be a notice on this website and the Araneae Announcement List.

    Thanks.

    I hope you consider it, and reconsider it.
    Have you ever considered it? Seriously considered it?

    Maybe you could google or get in contact with other Delphi developers, just to see if you find anyone with experience in porting applications to Linux, maybe it could be done really easily and quickly?
    If you could quickly port it with little effort, then that would be great, to increase the userbase of Araneae. It would be a win/win situation.

    Releasing the source code would be great too. Thousand of developers worldwide have done so. I have never heard of anyone who complained about it or came to regret it. It would result in a stronger, larger and more enthusiastic community, and it would hopefully lead to many valuable contributions which would improve Araneae, I know that you do not have so much time to develop Araneae these days...
    Via SourceForge you could collect donations too;
    * http://sourceforge.net/

    Many of the most well-known software in existence is open source such as Linux, BSD, Apache, PHP, Perl, MySQL, Python, Ruby, Java, Firefox, OpenOffice etc.

    UID, just run Araneae in WINE or Crossover Office. Thats what I do when I need to do HTML editing on Linux. Everything, including clips, extensions, etc. work in my copy of Kubuntu. I actually have a custom LiveCD of Slax with Araneae running native through WINE on it as well.

    BTW: Just look at Audacity or OpenOffice, you can go into stores and see people who have rebranded it and are selling it. Keeping it closed source is the way to go.

    Dan, thanks for your reply. It's nice that you can run Araneae under Wine.
    But if a native port was possible (without much effort), then that would be great too.

    I've never went into a store and seen any open source software rebranded and for sale. Keeping it closed source does not protect from this, there are many easy-to-use software which lets you change text strings, and replace images in .exe files, it would be very trivial to rebrand Araneae and sell it.

    "Will you make Araneae open source?
    Not in the forseeable future. It's always a possibility, but, contrary to what my slow development suggests, I do enjoy managing the project myself. Also, I'm currently using some commercial third-party components that make open-sourcing Araneae impossible for the time being."

    Tell the Araneae community which proprietary third-party components you are using, and ask us to help you, I am sure there are Araneae users which have experience in software developing, and who would help find or code replacements.

    If you open source it, it does not mean you wont be able to keep on enjoy managing the project yourself. You can still do that. People might send you patches, but its up to you if you want to merge/commit them or not.

    More eyes on the source code, will result in bugs getting found and fixed faster.

    In spirit of bumping a really old topic I write my post here.

    I added Araneae to Wine AppDB, so anyone interested in using it with Wine, can check the latest status of how it works.
