    Greetings all,

As work slowly progresses on our favourite web editor, I've run across some important decision points. To help me with these decisions, I'd appreciate your responses to the following questions:

    • Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?
    • Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
    • What web-related languages do you use?
    • Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
    • Do you use Araneae for commercial work?

Thanks very much for your input.

    • Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?

There are still people who do use Win95 (although not too many), and I think it would be a shame to not have that compatibility. However, in my case, I do not need the compatibility. Make it compatible with Win98SE (I assume it will be )

    • Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?

      Yes. Definitely

    • What web-related languages do you use?

      HTML, Javascript, PHP, CSS

    • Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?

Yes. But have an option to toggle it on or off.

    • Do you use Araneae for commercial work?

      Yes.

Thanks very much for your input.

    1. Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?

I'm happy as long as it's compatible with Windows 98 SE. But yes, it's important for Araneae to be Windows 95-compatible.

    2. Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?

Of course I'd _like_ such a feature, but it's not important at all to me.

    3. What web-related languages do you use?

HTML, CSS, PHP, and once in a green moon, javascript. Every blue moon or so, I use Perl.

    4. Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?

NO!!!! (but have an option to toggle it on :-))

    5. Do you use Araneae for commercial work?

No. But I would if I did commercial work.

Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?

Not for me. I'd be very surprised if you would find many active web workers using 95.

Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?

Not important for me. Araneae will never replace my normal web editor. For me Araneae's attraction is its simplicity for quick mods and alterations to pages prepared elsewhere. This is where I find it currently almost perfect, except for the missing copy and paste icons....sorry , I don't want to start this one up again...

And before anyone tells me to use Notepad, I just want to say that Araneae's multitabbed interface with syntax highlighting and full word wrap are the features which make it useful for me - in addition to its quality 'look' which continues to delight me.

What web-related languages do you use?

    HTML, PHP, Javascript, pearl

Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?

Not too keen on this type of feature.

Do you use Araneae for commercial work?

Well, it's strictly commercial work I do but no one pays me because it's for a charity!

Looking forward to the new version...

No. But why do you ask? A good win32 app is compatible with all Windows version. I don't know what kind of rubbish you are adding to A5, but please try to make it simple!

Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?

Mwah. I never use them now. Perhaps I will if there are some USEFULL things there. I mean, it's more work to move the mouse than typing <i>.

What web-related languages do you use?

    HTML, ASP

Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?

Depends on how it's implemented. The VC++ and VB ways are pretty usefull (popup a listbox with the items and control+space finishes a word)

Do you use Araneae for commercial work?

Nope. I don't do any commercial work

Microsoft doesn't support 95 anymore and i don't see any reason why you should either. If i'm ever stuck with a 95 box i can just use notepad.

Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
Editing a XML file would be great, would leave bloat out of the editor and hell you can just edit the XML file within araneae anyways.

What web-related languages do you use?
    In order of use:
html/css, php, javascript, vbscript, perl and xml.

Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
Auto-complete would be interesting but if i wanted context sensitive help i'd just go use one of the much larger web editors.

Do you use Araneae for commercial work?
    Yes.

+ Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?
    - No. Windows 95 is pretty much obsolete, so why bother?

+ Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
    - Yes. XML is frightening to people not accustomed to it and being stricter than HTML, mistakes are more easily made. I don't think it would bloat the editor.

+ What web-related languages do you use?
    - HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, Python (not exactly web-related, but I have some scripts employing it)

+ Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
    - Don't quite see the use of it for HTML. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt though for ppl new to HTML, who can't remember exactly how to spell "table".

+ Do you use Araneae for commercial work?
    - No.

Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?
    - Not for me.

Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
    - Yes, all the way.

What web-related languages do you use?
    - HTML, JavaScript, Perl

Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
    - Auto-complete can be extremely annoying if made wrong, and it's not very helpful for me. Context hint is okay.

Do you use Araneae for commercial work?
    - No.

Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?
    - Why? Windows 95 isn't compatible with anything else... Whatever...

Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
    - Yes, please, although storing them in XML might be "nice".

What web-related languages do you use?
    - HTML, swearing.

Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
    - Auto-complete, definitely NOT. It almost invariably picks wrong. Context-hint is better, and would be handy but not compulsory.

    - "Semi-commercial" - some professional user groups.

    # Is it important for the next version of Araneae to be Windows 95 compatible?
I'm currently using it on Win95, Me and XP. It wouldn't cause me any great hardship to stop using it on '95 if that makes it an easier build to keep bug-free, though.

    # Would you like 'Quick Tags' to be customizable from within the Araneae UI, as opposed to hand-editing an XML file?
XML is fine. It's not exactly an activity I do every day.

    # What web-related languages do you use?
    HTML, PHP, JavaScript, SQL queries.

    # Do you think auto-complete and context hint features are useful?
Autocomplete (as in the Microsoft 'please let me type what I want and leave me alone) -- No, not really.
Context hint -- not sure what you mean.
What I would like is Autocomplete in the sense of 'hit this key combination to close the last opened tag', and context as in 'list of the current tag hierarchy in the status bar'.

    # Do you use Araneae for commercial work?
    A little, yes.

[Just spotted the date on this posting. Mark - is feedback on these still useful?]
