Thanks for a great software. I have been looking to do a web photo album and thought it needed some expensive software and technical software until I ran across yours. I surfed on the net and tried a bunch of other ones and think yours is still the best for its simplicity and the needed features.

    Some suggestions
    1) I desperately want to put a personal banner, an option for this in the header with a hot link to an url would be great.
    2) I noticed when I opt to place the thumnails at the bottom, the comments for the pictures are below the thumnails and not below the pictures along with the title.
    3) Could you make the thumnails in a scrollable mode so that one can view them all by scrolling. this is not essential as your design is great but this may be an added benefit.
    4) Hot link button to a customized site for a home page

Again great product and beats anything that you even have to pay for.

    Sorry forgot one suggestion

Can you put a protection on the pictures so that people can not copy the pictures. I know this may be asking for a lot, but just another thought to make your software of of the best of its kind.

Well, there is no way to protect pictures on the web. There are a lot of ways someone can just grab them. You can never protect from them all. The 'right click menu', for example can be blocked, but that doesn't stop someone from simply taking a screenshot or even copying the picture from their cache. You know, I think the best way is to just place transparent gifs over all the pictures so they can't be dragged, can't be 'right clicked', etc. But that still doesn't stop someone from taking a screenshot or copying from their cache.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

The last one is actually one of my most requested features. Unfortunately, it's just not possible to prevent people from copying pictures off the web.

I'll probably add this to the FAQ, but for those that are interested, here is my explanation on why such a feature won't be added to Web Album Generator and what alternative steps are available. My apologies in advance for its length. Please let me know if there is anything I've forgotten to answer before I include it in the FAQ.

Is it possible to protect my photos from being copied or saved?

    In short, no.

When most people speak of an anti-theft feature, they're referring to a simple JavaScript snippet that will interrupt the "right-click" or context-sensitive menu. Obviously, such a script exists, but it's easy to circumvent and is highly annoying for anyone that uses the menu to navigate, print, refresh, etc. Indeed, there are many legitimate uses for the right-click menu; that's why it's there!

Many people don't realise that right-clicking is not necessary to save an image. Internet Explorer lets you save an entire web page (including images) to a location of your choice by using "Save As..." from the "File" menu. Moreover, all web browsers automatically save every image you view in a folder on your hard drive known as the cache. These files are deleted on a regular basis, but they can always be copied and renamed to a new location. Even if it were impossible to save images off the web directly, a sneaky thief could simply press "Print Screen" on his/her keyboard to take an instant snapshot of the entire screen and paste the image into a program like Paint.

What can I do to deter people from 'stealing' my images? Can I prevent unauthorized people from viewing my photos?

Indeed, there are a few things you can do to deter theives.

If you're truly concerned about the intellectual property of your images, a simple copyright notice will usually suffice. This can be inserted in your photo description using Web Album Generator.

If you're interested in setting up an album for an exclusive group of people, such as your friends and family, ask your web service provider to set up a "password protected" folder for you. Only those with a username and password you specify will be able to view your photos. You can email this username and password to your friends, and change the password if you feel it may have been "leaked out" somehow.

Lastly, if you feel either of these steps isn't secure enough, you may want to reconsider publishing your photos on something as accessible as the Internet altogether.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know. I'd like to have a good write-up on this issue for the FAQ.

Yes. You can always add some options to make it more difficult for unexperienced people to steal images.

    What about a comination of:

A transparent gif over the image using css. Dragging it or using the the context-menu will only save that gif.

If you want to prevent a print-screen from capturing the 'pure' image, put some copyright info on the transparent gif itself.

There's also a script out there (or was it a meta-tag?) to prevent the pc from putting images in the cache.

#1 and 2 can protect the image, without interfering with normal browser-functions. #3 can be a pain, so you could leave that one out. And if you don't want to use the whole 'transparent gif'-idea, there's also a script that disables the context-menu on a specific picture only.

Just some suggestions you might want to put in the program as options. I don't use it myself, but it looks great.

Well, there are probably a near infinite collection of techniques I could try; but none of them circumvent the easiest method of saving images: File->Save As.

I'm afraid any combination of tricks would simply litter the page with (usually) ill-conformed filler. Since this bears no relation to the actual content of the page, I choose to not implement any such technique. Statistically, image theft is more of a fear than a reality anyway.

Interestingly, I haven't thought of using the no-cache pragma as a tool to prevent image copying.

A no-cache entry could be added to the response header, but it would have to be done from the server side. A meta tag will only apply to the document in transit (the HTML page). Even so, I still think the negative effects would outweigh the benefits. Copying from the cache is a rare technique to save images, and re-loading a 1Mb image or page of thumbnails with every visit would annoy visitors (especially mothers who might want to see pictures of their grandchildren over and over from a slow connection :))

Thanks guys for taking the time to respond my question. Reading your reply, i agree that the troubles are more hassle than it is worth for the user. After all, i do not think it is meant for professional users, but I wonder if a simple cut off of the right click menu would at least restrict the none technical pirates. Although it would not prevent the computer savy but it may avoid the average user from simply putting it on their desktop without permission..

Mark did you get a chance to look at the other suggestions.

    Thanks

    Yes, thank you!

As courtesy to everyone, I should mention that I don't always reply to wishes, but I do read and consider every wish. Suggestions are always appreciated.

I would like the option to ad a copyright notice on each page without having to type that in for every picture caption. Others have suggested more options with headers/footers. Perhaps this could be included with those requests.

You could add an optional feature that automatically puts a visible watermark on the large pics in the album and thus saves folks like me from doing it one at a time, a real pain for big albums.
